About Fossalta di Portogruaro

Fossalta di Portogruaro is a small town with huge potential. With a population of just over 6,000, it is located near Portogruaro and the border with Friuli. Agriculture is a key part of the economy and the town continues to have a strong community spirit. Even the most inobservant visitors cannot fail to notice just how big a role associations play in life in Fossalta di Portogruaro. Many larger towns do not even come close to matching the level of involvement in this sphere, which is something to truly cherish. There are more than 60 voluntary and cultural associations, which organize initiatives and entertainment for people from every walk of life. Some of the more famous events include the “Festival of the Assumption” (also the patron saint of the town) on 15 August, the “Festival of Saint Louis” in Alvisopoli in June and the “Festival of Our Lady of the Snows” in Stiago in late July. The many groups include choirs, which are the pride of Fossalta di Portogruaro. A key contribution to the local economy is played by the numerous wineries in the area. Fossalta is also a treasure trove of art and architecture. Nobody should miss out on a trip to the 18th century Villa Sidran and the parish church of San Zenone, which contains a large selection of invaluable artworks. Another interesting sight is the majestic oak tree opposite the Chapel of Sant’Antonio in Villanova, which is more than 500 years old and is a record-breaking size. It has 20 m of foliage on top of a 16 m trunk and at 1 m above the ground it has a circumference of an incredible 8.7 m. Another significant part of the architectural heritage is Villa Mocenigo in Alvisopoli, whose grounds contain a WWF conservation area full of spectacular natural marvels.
