On the first Sunday of October, Borgo San Giovanni (which is widely known as the salon of Portogruaro) takes on a festive appearance for the traditional Festival of Our Lady of the Rosary: an event that combines religion with traditions and sees the area working in partnership with the Parish of Sant’Andrea. It is a festival with an ancient feel that is extremely popular among the people of Portogruaro. Long-standing celebrations are fused with new features and entertainment. For two days – Saturday and Sunday – stalls and exhibitors of all kinds fill the streets with life. Old games (such as the traditional “fishing in the well of San Patrizio”) are revived for the youngsters of today and there is a packed religious programme that culminates in a procession during which a wooden statue of the Madonna and Child on a Throne is carried on people’s shoulders through the streets. There are also culinary creations on offer, including the countless varieties of roast duck served in the town’s restaurants.
